Caring for Your Genius Board Game Table
Genius tables are finished with Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C on solid oak. Unlike traditional polyurethanes that sit on top of the wood, Rubio Monocoat bonds with the top fibers of the wood, creating a strong, protective layer that enhances the wood’s natural look and feel. Here’s how to keep yours in good shape.
Oak & the Oil Finish
Oak is durable and naturally resistant to decay, but its tannins can react with metals and cause discoloration. The Rubio Monocoat finish protects the wood while keeping its natural character, treat it accordingly. With proper care, there should never be a need for a re-coat or a messy re-sand and refinish.
Cleaning
- For the first week after delivery, don’t use water. Allow at least 5 days for the finish to fully cure before cleaning with liquids.
- After that, wipe down with a lightly damp cloth for routine cleaning. Remember damp, not wet.
- For a deeper clean, use Rubio Monocoat Surface Care Soap. This natural soap thoroughly removes dirt and grease without leaving a film or affecting the matte finish or natural look of the wood.
- Clean up drink spills immediately. Left to sit, liquids cause staining and faint spots. Don’t forget to clean between the table leaves.
- Avoid harsh household cleaners, ammonia-based products, or abrasive sponges, these can break down the molecular bond of the finish and damage the wood.
- For velvet surfaces, vacuum gently or blot spills with a dry cloth. No bleach or harsh chemicals.

Prevention
- Always use coasters. The cupholders are there for a reason.
- Never place hot pans or items directly on the table surface.
- Keep the table out of direct sunlight, UV fades and discolors oak over time.
- Don’t position it near heat sources like radiators. Excessive heat or humidity can warp the wood or cause the leaves to stick.
- A simple sign that your finish is holding up well: liquids should bead on the surface. If they stop beading, the wood is ready for maintenance.
Long-Term Maintenance
- Inspect the surface regularly for early signs of wear.
- Black or brown marks (usually from metal cans or glasses)? These tannin stains occur when wood comes into contact with moisture and metal. Rubio Monocoat Tannin Remover is formulated to address these spots, but act quickly.
- For stubborn grease or oily stains, use Rubio Monocoat Grease Remover.
- Over time, high-use areas can develop dry-looking spots as the finish wears away. When this happens, use Rubio Monocoat Renew, a ready-to-use product that rejuvenates, restores, and safeguards the surface, bringing it back to a freshly oiled condition, no sanding required.
- On average, a maintenance coat with Renew is recommended every 3–5 years, though heavily used surfaces may need it sooner.
- To refresh the sheen, use Universal Maintenance Oil for a velvet-like finish, or SheenPlus for a more durable satin look.
- For significant damage, consult a wood finishing professional.
